With this victory, Sporting Lagos joins Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City in the NPFL for the 2026/2027 season. This marks a significant milestone for football in the commercial capital, as Lagos will now have three representative clubs in the nation's premier division for the first time in recent memory.
Inter Lagos had already secured their promotion earlier this month, while Ikorodu City continues to make waves in the top flight, recently climbing to third place on the NPFL table.
Heartbreak For Akwa United
The promotion of Sporting Lagos comes at the expense of Akwa United. Although the Uyo based side secured a 1-0 away victory against Solution FC in Awka on the same day, Sporting Lagos' win in Ile Ogbo meant Akwa United finished just short of the promotion spot and will remain in the second division for another campaign.
What Is Next For Sporting Lagos
Having achieved their primary target of a swift return to the NPFL following their relegation two years ago, Sporting Lagos will now turn their attention to the NNL Super 4 playoffs. This tournament, scheduled to take place in late April, will feature the top teams from each NNL conference to determine the overall champion of the second tier.
Head coach Jeffery Buttler, who described the match against Osun United as the biggest game of his players' lives, will now look to strengthen the squad ahead of what promises to be a highly competitive 2026/2027 NPFL season.
