Nigerian Power! Onuachu and Nwakaeme Lead Trabzonspor to Turkish Cup Semi-Final Glory

TRABZON — Nigeria’s "Twin Engines," Paul Onuachu and Anthony Nwakaeme, were the heroes of the night as Trabzonspor battled past Samsunspor to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the 2026 Turkish Cup (Ziraat Türkiye Kupası). After 120 minutes of grueling, goalless football at the New Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium, the claret-blues triumphed 3-1 in a high-stakes penalty shootout.

The match was a classic Black Sea derby, defined by defensive discipline and high tension. Samsunspor was reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute after striker Cherif Ndiaye received a red card, but Trabzonspor found it difficult to break down the resilient home side. With the score locked at 0-0 after extra time, the Nigerian internationals took center stage to deliver when it mattered most.

The Shootout Specialists

Both Paul Onuachu and Anthony Nwakaeme displayed ice-cold composure during the shootout. Stepping up under immense pressure, they clinicaly converted their spot-kicks to give Trabzonspor the edge.

While the Nigerian duo provided the finishing touch, goalkeeper Andre Onana—on loan from Manchester United—was the ultimate wall, saving three penalties to dismantle Samsunspor’s hopes and cement Trabzonspor’s progression.

What’s Next?

With this victory, Trabzonspor advances to face Gençlerbirliği in the semi-finals, scheduled for mid-May 2026. The other semi-final will see Beşiktaş take on Konyaspor. For Onuachu, this performance caps off an incredible run, as he has now found the net (including shootouts) in each of his last 11 appearances.
