William Opare Stuns Field at ASU Invitational: 400m Specialist Dominates 100m Debut

SAN ANGELO — Ghana’s rising athletics star, William Opare, has proven that his speed knows no bounds. Primarily recognized as a dominant force in the 400m, Opare stepped down in distance at the 2026 ASU Invitational in Texas, delivering a shocking performance to win the men’s 100m in a blistering 10.17 seconds.

The performance at the LeGrand Stadium has sent ripples through the collegiate and international track circuits. Competing with "No Wind Index" (NWI) recorded, Opare showcased a raw, explosive start and a powerful drive phase that left established sprinters in his wake.

Unlocking a New Level

Opare, who recently set a Ghanaian National Indoor Record of 45.67s in the 400m, was expected to use this meet to sharpen his speed for the upcoming outdoor quarter-mile season. However, the 10.17s clocking suggests that the Angelo State University standout may have a bright future as a multi-event sprint threat.

The victory confirms that Opare’s transition from a freshman sensation to a world-class athlete is accelerating. For track analysts, the most frightening part of the 10.17s run was the apparent ease with which he crossed the line, signaling that there is significantly more "raw speed" in the tank.
