President Ruto rolls out red carpet for historic marathoner Sabastian Sawe

NAIROBI - Kenya has officially welcomed home its newest national hero, Sabastian Sawe, who returned to a rapturous reception after shattering the marathon world record in London this past Sunday. The history-maker, who became the first human to officially run a marathon under two hours, was hosted by President William Ruto at State House on Thursday in a ceremony that celebrated his monumental achievement.

The President led the nation in honoring Sawe, whose time of 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds has redefined the limits of human endurance. In a display of national pride, the government awarded the 30-year-old athlete a total of KSh 8 million. This sum includes KSh 5 million for the world record and an additional KSh 3 million for winning the gold medal, consistent with the new national reward system for elite athletes.

In an added gesture of appreciation for his historic performance, President Ruto presented Sawe with a custom vehicle number plate bearing his record-breaking time, 01:59:30. The President also committed to purchasing a car of the athlete's choice as a further token of gratitude for placing Kenya at the pinnacle of global athletics once again.

During the reception, the President described Sawe's run as a defining moment in the history of sports. He noted that such achievements inspire not just Kenyans but the entire world, proving that boundaries once thought impenetrable can be crossed through dedication and discipline.

Sawe, arriving at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport earlier in the day, was visibly moved by the outpouring of support from fans and officials. Speaking at the State House, he dedicated the victory to the country, noting that his success was a collective win for all Kenyans. He expressed his gratitude for the government's continued investment in sports infrastructure, which he credited for nurturing the talent required to compete and win on the world stage.

The record-breaking performance in London has sent shockwaves through the athletics world, as Sawe outperformed a world-class field to cross the line in 1:59:30. This result comfortably beat the previous world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum, effectively marking a new era for marathon running.

Athletics officials present at the event praised Sawe's consistency over the years, noting his dominance in road races across Riga, Valencia, Berlin, and now London. As Sawe begins his celebrations, the country looks forward to his next chapter, with the athlete already vowing to continue training hard for future challenges on the global stage.
