PRETORIA — The South African speed king has officially opened his account for the 2026 season in sensational fashion. Playing host at his namesake event, the Simbine Classic, Akani Simbine electrified the Pilditch Stadium crowd by storming to victory in the men’s 100m with a blistering time of 9.98 seconds.
Despite the pressure of hosting Africa's first-ever athlete-titled Continental Tour Silver meeting, Simbine remained clinical. Running with a favorable +1.7 m/s wind, the Olympic silver medalist showcased his trademark transition, pulling clear of the field at the 60-meter mark to dip under the 10-second barrier in his first outing of the year.
South African 1-2 Finish
The race was a triumph for local sprinting as Cheswill Johnson secured second place in 10.07s. Johnson had earlier signaled his intent by clocking a lightning-fast 10.02s in the pre-program heats. Canada’s Aaron Brown completed the podium, finishing third in 10.14s.
Heat Drama: PJ Austin Stuns De Grasse
