The Barrier is Broken! Sabastian Sawe Shatters World Record in 1:59:30 at 2026 London Marathon

LONDON — History has been rewritten on the streets of London. In a performance that defies the previous limits of human endurance, Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe has become the first man to officially break the two-hour barrier in a competitive marathon. Crossing the finish line at The Mall in a staggering 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds, Sawe obliterated the previous world record of 2:00:35, ushering in a new era for global athletics.

The 2026 London Marathon will go down as the fastest race in history. Not only did Sawe break the barrier, but he was pushed to the limit by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, who finished second in 1:59:41—the fastest marathon debut ever recorded. Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo took third in 2:00:28, meaning the entire podium finished under the previous world record held by the late Kelvin Kiptum.

A Race for the Ages

From the 30km mark, it was clear that something special was happening. The lead pack, guided by relentless pacing, went through the half-marathon mark in 1:00:29. As the race entered the final stages along the Embankment, Sawe and Kejelcha broke away in a two-horse race that saw both men dipping under the legendary two-hour mark. Sawe’s final kick in the last two kilometers proved decisive, as he pulled away to claim the crown and the world record.

"It is a day to remember," an emotional Sawe told reporters after the race. "I felt strong coming into the final miles. This record is not just for me; it is for every runner who believed this was possible."
