TRAGEDY IN GHANA: 20-Year-Old Football Star Dominic Frimpong Shot Dead in Brutal Team Bus Ambush

The Ghanaian football community has been plunged into deep mourning following the senseless killing of Berekum Chelsea winger Dominic Frimpong. The 20-year-old rising star was fatally shot when the team bus came under a violent attack by armed robbers on Sunday night, April 12, 2026.

The chilling incident occurred around 10:30 PM local time along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District. Berekum Chelsea was returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against Samartex in Samreboi when their journey turned into a nightmare. According to club officials and police reports, a group of six masked men wielding assault rifles and shotguns blocked the road to intercept the vehicle.

As the driver desperately attempted to reverse the bus to escape the ambush, the gunmen opened fire. In the ensuing chaos, players and staff members were forced to flee into the nearby bushes to take cover. While most of the 30 passengers managed to escape physical harm, Frimpong was struck by gunfire. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries while receiving emergency treatment.

Dominic Frimpong was considered one of the brightest young talents in the league. He had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC earlier this year, making 13 appearances and scoring two goals this season. His death has sent shockwaves through the continent, drawing tributes from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and CAF President Patrice Motsepe, who described the loss as a profound tragedy for African football.

In response to the heartbreak, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a nationwide tribute for the late forward. Ahead of this weekend’s domestic competitions, including the MTN FA Cup semi-finals and the Women’s Premier League final, a minute of silence will be observed across all match venues. Players and officials will also wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the fallen winger.

The Ghana Police Service has launched a massive manhunt for the perpetrators, with the Ashanti Regional Police Command deploying crime scene experts to the area. Reports indicate that two suspects have already been detained as investigations deepen.

Berekum Chelsea has since suspended operations to provide psychological support and medical checks for the traumatized survivors. The funeral for Dominic Frimpong is scheduled to take place on April 29, 2026, in his hometown of Assin Fosu, where family, friends, and the football fraternity will gather to say their final goodbyes to a life cut short in its prime.
