Next Gen Table Tennis Legend Junior Aruna Secures Silver in France as Global Rise Continues

The legacy of Nigerian table tennis icon Quadri Aruna is in safe hands as his son, Junior Aruna, continues to dominate the international youth circuit. Just days after a triumphant outing in Luxembourg, the ten-year-old prodigy secured another silver medal at the WTT Youth Contender Series in Metz, France, on Wednesday, April 15, 2026.

This latest achievement cements Junior Aruna’s reputation as one of the brightest young prospects in global table tennis. Competing in both the Boys’ U-11 and U-13 categories, the youngster demonstrated exceptional grit, particularly in the U-11 division where he battled through a field of elite international opponents.

Junior’s path to the podium in Metz began with a high-intensity 3-2 victory over Brazil’s Rafael Suguimoto. He then faced a formidable challenge from local French favorites. While a narrow 2-3 loss to Lyazid Idrissi ultimately cost him the gold medal, the Nigerian sensation showed immense composure to bounce back and defeat Nolan Lhuissier with a clinical 3-0 sweep, officially securing the silver medal.

Mentorship from a Champion Family

The Aruna family’s success is a collective effort. Junior is currently coached by his mother, Ganiat Aruna, a former international player who balances the roles of technical advisor and parent on the road.

Reflecting on the Metz tournament, Ganiat noted that while the narrow miss for gold was disappointing, the primary goal remains long-term development. She emphasized that exposing Junior and his sister, Mariam, to high-level competition is essential for their growth.

It has not been easy combining coaching with caring for them during the trip, Ganiat shared, but I am proud of their progress and hopeful they can achieve even more than we did in the sport.

A Family of Rising Stars

Junior wasn’t the only Aruna making waves in France. His 13-year-old sister, Mariam Aruna, also delivered a promising performance. Competing in the Girls’ U-15 category, Mariam reached the top 32, holding her own against older and more experienced athletes. She also gained valuable experience competing in the U-17 division.

A Red-Hot Winning Streak

The silver in Metz follows a stellar performance in Luxembourg just a week prior, where Junior Aruna clinched both a silver in the U-11 category and a bronze in the U-13. His recent run of form has caught the attention of the National Sports Commission (NSC), with Director-General Bukola Olopade hailing the youngster as a big plus for the future of Nigerian sports.

As Junior Aruna continues to rack up medals across Europe, the table tennis world is watching closely. If his current trajectory is any indication, the Aruna name will remain at the pinnacle of the sport for decades to come.
